While the first volume examined how reliable knowledge is produced and the second explored how artificial intelligence is transforming research and the social sciences, this volume turns to a more fundamental question: who is the knower, and why does knowledge matter? Drawing particularly on neuroscience, cognitive science, psychology, evolutionary theory, and philosophy, it examines the biological and cognitive foundations through which human beings perceive, interpret, remember, and give meaning to the world.

The book develops a mind-first approach to the social sciences, arguing that social phenomena cannot be fully understood without considering the perceptual and cognitive mechanisms through which individuals experience reality. It explores consciousness, memory, emotion, perception, identity, and meaning, and considers how these processes shape both individual and societal life. In an age when intelligent machines increasingly rival or surpass humans in many analytical tasks, the book asks what remains distinctively human. It argues that the future significance of the human and social sciences may increasingly lie not only in producing knowledge, but in understanding consciousness, judgment, values, and the human search for meaning.

Klaus Solberg Söilen is an economist and Professor of Business Administration at Halmstad University, Sweden, and currently a Visiting Research Scholar at Tokyo College, The University of Tokyo, Japan. His research spans economics, intelligence studies, digital marketing, geoeconomics, research methodology, and the application of evolutionary theory to economics and the social sciences. He served for more than a decade as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Intelligence Studies in Business (JISIB). He is the author of several books on economics, intelligence, methodology, and the social sciences, including Market Intelligence: Building Strategic Insight (CEIBS Press, 2009), Intelligence Studies in Business (Springer, 2024), The Researcher’s Journey: A Guide to Methodology and Academia in Social Sciences (Springer, 2025), and Applied Evolutionary Economics: Insights from Biology for Real-World Management (Springer, 2025). His recent work examines how evolutionary theory, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, and cognitive science can contribute to a more integrated understanding of economic and social life, knowledge, and the human mind.

Publication Date:

20 February 2027

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032412874

Format:

Hardback

Page Count:

340
