Microtherapy

Windy Dryden

Psychology / Clinical Psychology

This book addresses the growing need for therapists to offer microtherapy sessions—brief, focused conversations that take place in real time, either in person or online, and typically last no longer than 30 minutes. Microtherapy differs from single-session interventions (SSIs), which are delivered digitally and do not involve live interaction. While there is some overlap between the two, SSIs tend to be longer and more structured. Despite its increasing use, microtherapy remains underexplored in clinical training. Therapists are often expected to rely on their existing skills, yet many find themselves unprepared for the unique demands of these short, high-impact sessions. There is little formal guidance on how to conduct them effectively, and the assumption that traditional training is sufficient can leave therapists struggling. This book sets out to address many of these points.

Dr. Windy Dryden is an international authority on single-session therapy (SST) and rational emotive behaviour therapy (REBT). He has published over 300 books, over forty of which are on SST. He has done over 900 demonstrations of very brief therapy, most of which are thirty minutes or less, qualifying them as microtherapy. He also worked for eighteen months for a digital online health service offering 30-minute video-based therapy sessions.
