Curating ‘Cursed Objects’ in Museum Shops
Kasia Tomasiewicz
Drawing on the material culture podcast Cursed Objects, this book offers a unique insight into curating a research-led exhibition on museum shops. Museum shops are much enjoyed by the public but under explored in academic literature. This book establishes ground for some of the debates around museum shop studies within the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums (GLAM) sector. In doing so it highlights how debates in museums on topics as diverse as commercialisation, consumption and economic need have affected the objects sold in museum shops. It offers two areas for departure: first it highlights the work being undertaken in museum shop studies, that has hitherto been fairly disparate, and second it offers a practical case study for translating this research into public content via an exhibition, event series and podcast.
