Nigel Johnston | Andrew Plummer
Nigel Johnston is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath, UK. He specialises in the areas of fluid-borne noise measurement and reduction in hydraulic fluid power systems, active noise control, numerical modelling of hydraulic components, unsteady turbulent flow, pipeline and hose dynamics, and digital switched hydraulics. Nigel Johnston studied the measurement and prediction of pressure ripple in hydraulic systems for his PhD. This work has since been used as the basis for ISO Standards for the measurement of pump pressure ripple characteristics. He has supervised 28 PhD students to completion. He was awarded the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ Joseph Bramah Medal in 2021 for ‘outstanding achievement tending to advance the science of mechanical engineering, particularly in the field of hydraulic engineering.’He regularly teaches on industrial fluid power courses in the UK, Europe and USA, and has been Chair and Editor for the Bath Symposium on Fluid Power and Motion Control since 2004.
Andrew Plummer is a Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Bath, and Director of the Centre for Power Transmission and Motion Control. He received his PhD from the University of Bath in 1991, and has undertaken research into the modelling and control of actuation systems at Rediffusion Simulation Ltd (flight simulators), the University of Leeds, and as world-wide control R&D manager for Instron Ltd from 1999 (materials and vibration testing machines). His research interests include: motion and force control, control of parallel kinematic mechanisms, hybrid hydraulic/piezoelectric actuation, active vehicle control, robotic powered prostheses, and additively manufactured hydraulic valves. He was awarded the Bramah Medal in 2016 and the Koski Medal in 2024 for ‘advancing the art and practice of fluid power motion and control through education and/or innovation’.
