Current Perspectives of Exercise in Oncology
Physiotherapy-Driven Rehabilitation Approaches
Alper Tuğral
This book aims to provide a comprehensive and structured exploration of exercise science within the context of oncology. Uniquely, it addresses the role of exercise across specific cancer diagnoses, a perspective that is currently lacking in existing literature. While exercise is widely acknowledged as a supportive intervention in cancer care, most available resources discuss it in a general sense without focusing on how exercise protocols may vary according to the type, stage, and clinical course of different malignancies.
The primary aim of this book is to bridge this gap by presenting evidence-based insights into how exercise impacts physical function, quality of life, treatment outcomes, and survivorship in patients with various types of cancer. Each chapter will be dedicated to a specific malignancy, offering tailored exercise approaches based on the latest clinical guidelines and scientific research.
Moreover, the book’s structure, with contributions from experts in oncology rehabilitation, ensures both depth and clarity. Its goal is to serve as a reliable academic and clinical reference that informs education, guides clinical decision-making, and supports ongoing research.
This book aims to become a pioneering resource in the field, empowering healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes through individualized, science-driven exercise interventions.
This work will benefit a multidisciplinary audience, including physical therapists, oncologists, rehabilitation professionals, exercise physiologists, and other healthcare providers involved in cancer care.

He completed his PhD in 2021, with a dissertation focused on assessing upper extremity function in individuals recovering from breast cancer. His academic and research pursuits lie primarily within the fields of physiotherapy and rehabilitation, where he explores a range of specialized topics that contribute to both clinical application and theoretical advancement. Dr. Tuğral's expertise encompasses the evaluation and rehabilitation of lymphedema, development of comprehensive oncological rehabilitation programs, treatment approaches for venous diseases, and the implementation of complex decongestive physiotherapy techniques. His work is particularly significant in improving the quality of life for patients dealing with chronic conditions related to cancer and vascular health.
In addition to his research contributions, Dr. Tuğral plays an active role in undergraduate education. He lectures on a variety of core subjects including kinesiology, biostatistics, prosthetics and orthotics, and lymphedema management within the Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation program. His teaching integrates clinical insight with academic rigor, preparing students for evidence-based practice.
He has been actively engaged in international academic circles, participating in major scientific congresses such as those organized by the European Society of Lymphology (ESL) and the International Society of Lymphology (ISL) since 2015. In recognition of his promising contributions to the field, he was awarded the “Young Lymphologist Prize” at the ESL Congress held in the Czech Republic in 2019.
Through his combined roles as a researcher, educator, and clinician, Dr. Tuğral continues to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of physiotherapy and rehabilitation sciences, with a particular focus on oncology and vascular health.
