50 Years of the AHP: Recent Advances and Future Challenge
Jiří Mazurek | Konrad Kułakowski | Luis G. Vargas
50 Years of the AHP: Recent Advances and Future Challenges presents recent theoretical, methodological, and applied developments in the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and its extensions.
The volume covers priority derivation, theoretical properties of the eigenvector method, incomplete pairwise comparison matrices, inconsistency, AHP modifications and extensions, Cognitive AHP, and experimental studies. It also presents applications of pairwise comparison methods in ranking and decision-making.
In general, this book provides a contemporary perspective on AHP research and highlights challenges and directions for future development.
JIRI MAZUREK received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in physics from the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Ph.D. degree in theory of education in physics from the Faculty of Science, University of Ostrava, in 2009, and habilitation from Prague University of Business in Econometrics and Operational Research. Since 2024, he has been an Associate Professor with the School of Business Administration in Karvina, Silesian University in Opava, Czech Republic. His fields of expertize include operational research, economics and economic growth. In particular, his current research interests include decision-making under uncertainty and an analysis of pairwise comparisons methods with respect to prioritization approaches and judgments’inconsistency. He published papers in renowned journals such as European Journal of Operational Research, Information Sciences, PLOS ONE, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Fuzzy Optimization and Decision Making, or Annnals of Operations Research. He is the author of the monograph Advances in Pairwise Comparisons: Detection, Evaluation and Reduction of Inconsistency (Spinger, 2023). He is a member of several European and American societies of operational research.
Konrad Kułakowski is an Associate Professor (dr hab., prof. ucz.) in the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at AGH University of Krakow, Poland. He has been affiliated with AGH since 2004 and has also served as Deputy Head of the Department of Applied Computer Science. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science, cum laude, from AGH University in 2004, with research focused on formal methods, system modeling, and temporal logic. In 2016, he obtained his habilitation in Computer Science. He also holds an M.Sc. in Computer Science, cum laude, from the Jagiellonian University. His main research interests include multiple-criteria decision-making, pairwise comparison methods, the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), inconsistency and incomplete preference information, group decision-making, algorithms, computational complexity, collective intelligence, and multi-agent systems. He has participated in and led several research projects funded by the Polish National Science Centre (NCN), focusing primarily on decision-making methods, preference modeling, and pairwise comparisons. He has also participated in applied R&D projects in cooperation with IT companies, combining academic research with the development of innovative software-based solutions. He is the author of the monograph Understanding the Analytic Hierarchy Process (Chapman & Hall/CRC, Taylor & Francis, 2020). He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in decision analysis, operational research, artificial intelligence, and computer science. His academic distinctions include several AGH Rector’s Awards for scientific, teaching, and organizational achievements, including Scientific Awards in 2021, 2023, and 2025, as well as a Kosciuszko Foundation research scholarship at California State University Channel Islands. He serves on editorial teams for Group Decision and Negotiation, Computer Science, Mathematics, and others.
Luis G. Vargas is a Professor of Operations, Decision Sciences and Artificial Intelligence, The Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA.B.S. in mathematics and M.S. Operations Research from the University of Granada, Spain, and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Sevilla, Spain. He is the Recipient of the Juan March Foundation Scholarship, Madrid, Spain, to the University of Pennsylvania, 1976-1978 where he studied under the guidance of Thomas Saaty and received his Ph.D. in Social Systems Sciences in 1979 from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He was the Chairman of the 2nd International Symposium on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (ISAHP) held in Pittsburgh August 11-14, 1991, at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, and the 15th ISAHP held in Hong Kong July 12-15, 2018.Co-Founder of the International Center for Conflict Resolution (IC4CR), 2018. He is a Recipient of the Thomas L. Saaty Award from the International Academy of Technology and Quantitative Management (IAITQM) in 2025 for his outstanding works toward development of creative thinking and methodologies. He is the author of over 100 papers in refereed journals and seven books. The last book “Overcoming the Retributive Nature of the Israeli Palestinian Conflict, with Thomas L. Saaty, H. Jerry Zoffer, and Amos N. Guiora.Springer 2022,” provides a road map that shows how to deal with difficult conflicts.
