Dr Venkataraman completed his medical degree in India (JIPMER, Pondicherry), graduating in 1980. He then completed his Residency in Pediatrics at UMDNJ, Newark from 1981-1984 and Fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh from 1984-1987. 

He was a Research fellow and Clinical Instructor in 1987 at the University of Pittsburgh, and a member of the Faculty in the School of Medicine since 1989 and is currently Professor in the Department of Critical Care Medicine and Pediatrics in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
