Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Pharmacy Practice
Alan J. Zillich | Kyle Hultgren | Amy Heck Sheehan
Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Pharmacy Practice explores the rapidly expanding role of artificial intelligence (AI) across the full spectrum of pharmacy practice. As AI technologies become increasingly integrated into healthcare, pharmacists are encountering new tools and applications that influence clinical decision-making, patient communication, medication management, and healthcare operations. This book provides a foundational understanding of AI principles for healthcare while examining their practical application in pharmacy settings. Through expert analysis and real-world examples, readers will learn to critically evaluate AI technologies and effectively incorporate them into patient-centered care.
Organized into three comprehensive sections, the book addresses AI applications in patient care, healthcare systems, and healthcare administration. Chapters explore topics ranging from diagnostic and communication skills, medication and patient safety, to health policy and legal and ethical considerations. Applications of Artificial Intelligence in Pharmacy Practice equips pharmacists, pharmacy educators, students, and healthcare administrators with practical strategies for understanding, assessing, and leveraging AI to optimize medication use, improve health outcomes, and advance the future of pharmacy practice.
Alan J. Zillich, Pharm.D., FCCP holds an academic appointment as Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at Purdue University College of Pharmacy where he previously served as Head of the Department. He also has a Research Scientist appointment at the Veterans Affairs Health Services Research Center for Health Information and Communication in Indianapolis, Indiana. Dr. Zillich’s research interests involve (1) the roles of professional collaborative relationships between pharmacists and other health care providers; (2) the effectiveness of pharmacy-based services on improved medication prescribing, patient safety, and patient health outcomes, and (3) methods to improve prescribing and utilization of medications through artificial intelligence, health informatics and data science approaches. It is this latter interest that sparked the writing of this book. Dr. Zillich has served on NIH and VA grant review panels and provided leadership on the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Research Institute Board of Trustees. Currently, he is an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy. He has published more than 125 peer reviewed publications and been awarded more than 4 million dollars in research grants.
Amy Heck Sheehan, PharmD is a Professor of Pharmacy Practice, with the Purdue University College of Pharmacy and a Drug Information Specialist at Indiana University (IU) Health. She received her B.S. (Pharmacy) and PharmD degrees from the University of Cincinnati and completed a Specialized Residency in Drug Information Practice and Pharmacotherapy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Sheehan is responsible for didactic and experiential instruction of evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles, including literature evaluation and interpretation of biomedical statistics, within the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program at Purdue University, and has over 25 years of experience providing comprehensive drug information services for the IU Health Center for Medication Use Management. She currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Annals of Pharmacotherapy and has authored over 90 peer-reviewed research reports, review articles, and book chapters, as well as numerous continuing education programs and meeting abstracts presented at national and international venues.
Kyle E. Hultgren, PharmD is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice with the College of Pharmacy at Purdue University where he also serves as a coordinator in the Professional Skills Lab in the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Dr. Hultgren’s current research includes work on artificial intelligence and the development of large language models for the evaluation and integration of publicly available social media data as potential surveillance signals. As a result of this work, he guided the creation of SafeRx, a large, curated, relational database containing millions of potential adverse events gathered using these tools. In addition to his research, he has worked extensively to bring new safety concepts to medical professionals and currently holds multiple patents on various medical devices and tools designed to improve patient safety. Dr. Hultgren co-created and continues to direct a two-year post-PharmD fellowship in medication safety and regulatory affairs. He lectures nationally and internationally on safe medication use practices and is the recipient of the Purdue University College of Pharmacy’s Dr. Aziz Teaching Award.
