Rethinking Chambers of Commerce

A Sectoral Model Blueprint

Piotr Marciniak

Business & Economics / Management

This book is an open access publication.Every business operates in a regulatory environment and engages directly or indirectly in essential dialogues with public institutions. Chambers of Commerce are a natural partner and intermediary for companies. They support their activities, provide them with information and knowledge, organize conferences, training and more. They represent business in dialogue with public institutions and may also carry out public law tasks and provide public services. However, they are underexplored in management and legal studies. This book fills the research gap and undertakes a comparative analysis of chamber of commerce models. To the three well-known models (Anglo-Saxon, Continental and Mixed) it adds two existing but lesser-known ones: Administrative and Sectoral.

The broad model analyses include countries from Europe, Asia, the Middle East and North America. The in-depth description of the Sector Model was based primarily on data and analyses concerning the possibilities and framework for its implementation in Poland. The model analyses were based on key issues related to chambers of commerce, such as their legal basis, organizational structure, membership, financing, tasks, and relations with the state, creating an intuitive and useful research matrix.

This book presents pioneering research on chambers of commerce, their organizational principles, their extraordinary diversity, their areas of activity, and the challenges and fundamental issues they face. It identifies innovative and practical institutional solutions capable of strengthening business support systems and enhancing economic governance in the context of today’s dynamic and often turbulent global environment. It will be of great interest to researchers, students of business strategy, management, law, economics, and business environment organizations, as well as representatives of public institutions – wherever the interaction of business with public policy is analysed.

Piotr Marciniak is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Law Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences. His research has focused on chambers of commerce, entrepreneurship and new technologies.
