Fundamentals and Applications of Psychrometry
Jose Roberto Simões-Moreira | Alberto Hernandez Neto
This book explores the dynamic behavior of moist air, water vapor, and heat and mass transfer processes, guiding readers through the principles and applications of psychrometrics in climate control and thermal comfort. Starting with core thermodynamic concepts such as temperature, pressure, and specific volume, dry and moist air, it progresses to key psychrometric parameters such as relative and absolute humidity, dew point, and enthalpy, supported by practical tools and diagrams. Readers will learn to interpret psychrometric charts, assess HVAC systems, and optimize air-conditioning processes including heating, cooling, humidification, and dehumidification. Advanced topics, including simultaneous heat and mass transfer, cooling towers, evaporative systems, and instrumentation techniques, make this a comprehensive resource for mastering moist air behavior in engineering applications.
José Roberto Simões Moreira, Ph. D., is a full professor of Mechanical Engineering at Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo, specializing in Energy and Thermal Engineering. He coordinates the SISEA—Renewable and Alternative Energy Systems Lab and leads a continuing education program on renewable energy, distributed generation, and energy efficiency for engineering professionals. His research focuses on thermal systems, including ammonia-water absorption cycles, supersonic CO₂ separation techniques, and concentrated solar energy. He has worked as a consultant and project coordinator for numerous initiatives, authoring more than 200 technical and scientific papers. He is also the author and editor of several technical books in Portuguese and English and was a visiting professor at the University of Utah in 2026.
Alberto Hernandez Neto is an associate professor at the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, where he focuses on air conditioning and refrigeration systems. His research interests include energy efficiency, system modeling, and simulation in HVAC applications. He actively contributes to technical standards and professional development through organizations such as ABCM and ANPRAC.
