Generative Artificial Intelligence in the Changing Mathematics Classroom
Johann Engelbrecht | Birgit Pepin
This books offers a comprehensive exploration of the evolving role of generative artificial intelligence in mathematics education. Drawing on contributions from leading international scholars, it examines theoretical, empirical, and pedagogical dimensions of AI integration in the mathematics classroom. Topics include ethical considerations, teacher and student engagement with AI tools, and the emergence of new mathematical practices. Through diverse perspectives and case studies, the book provides critical insights into how AI is reshaping teaching, learning, and assessment. It is an essential resource for researchers, educators, and policymakers navigating the future of mathematics education in an AI-mediated world.
Johann Engelbrecht is Professor Emeritus at the University of Pretoria. His research centers on undergraduate mathematics education, with a focus on cognitive transitions and curriculum reform. He has published extensively in international journals and contributed to advancing mathematics education through leadership in scholarly networks and editorial boards.
Birgit Pepin taught mathematics in England before completing a PhD on comparative teacher pedagogy in England, France, and Germany. She held academic posts in the UK, Norway (as full professor, 2009–2014), and the Netherlands (from 2015). Her research focuses on mathematics curriculum materials—especially digital and AI-related resources—and on teacher pedagogy and student learning in innovative environments.
