Towards a New Humanism
From Diseases to Patients and from the Sciences to Art
Christos Lionis | George Samoutis | Constantinos N. Phellas | Jonathan McFarland
This book delves into the evolving dynamics of the doctor-patient relationship, exploring the myriad factors that shape it, from behavioral and biological to ethical and technological. By drawing on insights from a wide range of disciplines, it explores the roles of science, ethics, the arts, and the humanities in medical practice. It forcefully argues that more science cannot heal this rift, nor can better education in ethics. To foster better communication, medical professionals must change their philosophy and methods so that value-laden issues in clinical medicine are interwoven with the necessary science. This multidisciplinary approach provides fresh perspectives that are invaluable to researchers and health practitioners worldwide.
Key concepts explored include the communication challenges between doctors and patients, the integration of science with ethics and the humanities in medical practice, and the development of a new bio-humanistic model. This model emphasizes patient preferences, satisfaction, and quality of life, advocating for a "humane understanding" over purely scientific explanations. The book also addresses critical issues such as patient autonomy, professional ethics, and the role of medical authorities. Through its diverse chapters, readers are invited to rethink traditional approaches to medicine and consider how the humanities can enhance our understanding of these complex interactions.
This volume is essential for students, clinicians, policymakers, and educators involved in health studies, nursing, public health, and social policy. It not only serves as a valuable resource for those undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate courses but also stimulates further discussion on pressing health-related issues. By offering new interdisciplinary perspectives on doctor-patient research, this book aims to enrich our comprehension of this vital relationship in contemporary healthcare settings.
