It discusses the evidence supporting the effectiveness of AI, which remains limited, and examines the understanding of unintended consequences (e.g. algorithmic bias and impact on equity) and the consequences of contextual variations. While numerous early-stage AI applications have emerged, relatively little attention has been given to the challenges of adoption, implementation, scaling and ensuring long-term sustainability. Strategic decisions about AI implementation, whether at national or local levels, are often not based on robust evidence. This gap is further exacerbated by a lack of evaluation and evidence assessment skills among key decision-makers and implementers.

The field of AI in healthcare and biomedicine is evolving rapidly. Traditional methods, such as randomized controlled trials, are often too slow to keep pace with the speed of technological innovation. As a result, observational studies have become a common method of assessment. Many existing evaluations, however, are of low quality and lack integrated assessments of value, impact and processes. They also do not routinely establish robust baselines against which progress can be measured. There is therefore a pressing need for developing new agile and adaptive approaches to evaluation. These must draw on innovative evaluation frameworks that address the increasing tension between the long timelines associated with robust evidence generation and the need for evidence-informed decision making in real-world settings.

Evaluating AI in Healthcare and Biomedicine: Foundations for Evidence-Based Decision Making in the Digital Age is an interdisciplinary approach integrating various perspectives and the pragmatic application of best practice in evaluating AI applications, ensuring that evidence emerging from evaluations will inform evidence-based decision making and harness the potential of AI to accelerate the safe adoption of AI in healthcare. This book addresses this gap and helps to educate the next generation of decision makers and evaluators.

Kathrin Cresswell is Professor of Digital Innovations in Health and Care at the Usher Institute, University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Her research focuses on the evaluation, implementation and scale-up of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in healthcare. A social scientist by background, she has particular expertise in understanding how technological, organisational and human factors shape the adoption, effectiveness and sustainability of digital innovations in real-world health systems. She has advised national and international organisations on digital health and AI and has published extensively on evaluating and implementing complex digital transformations in healthcare.

Mirela Prgomet is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research, Australian Institute of Health Innovation, Macquarie University. Her work examines how digital health technologies and changes in policy and practice affect healthcare delivery, drawing on sociotechnical perspectives to evaluate impacts on clinical workflows, patient safety, and care outcomes. She has extensive experience evaluating digital innovations in healthcare and serves on several national and international boards, advisory groups, and professional working groups focused on strengthening the evidence base for digital health and artificial intelligence in healthcare through rigorous evaluation.

Eva Weicken is an MD and Chief Medical Officer at the Department of Artificial Intelligence, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. With extensive professional experience, including clinical practice (neurology, intensive care, psychiatry) and applied science for AI in medicine, her research focuses on the evaluation and translation of AI in health systems for responsible, effective, and useful deployment in clinical settings. She has demonstrated experience in developing and applying best practices and standards for AI in health through multidisciplinary collaboration. She actively contributes to international AI in health initiatives and is a member of the WHO Europe Technical Advisory Group on AI for Health.

Publication Date:

02 April 2027

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032440693

Format:

Hardback
