Quantum circuits are introduced not merely as a representational tool, but as the central language connecting quantum algorithms, compiler technology, and physical devices. The text develops this perspective systematically, guiding the reader from foundational principles to advanced circuit architectures and real-world execution workflows. Beginning with the mathematical and conceptual foundations of qubits, gates, and circuit representations, this book establishes a solid and accessible basis for understanding gate-based quantum computation. It then advances to the construction of structured circuits, including reversible arithmetic components and canonical quantum algorithms, emphasizing explicit circuit layouts, resource accounting, and correctness. Throughout, theoretical concepts are tightly integrated with practical implementations using a purpose-built Python mini-library, ensuring that abstract ideas are directly connected to executable circuits. A distinctive feature of this book is its strong focus on noise, metrics, and optimization. Rather than treating ideal circuits in isolation, it addresses the realities of NISQ-era hardware, introducing noise models, circuit performance metrics, and both elementary and advanced optimization techniques. These topics are presented as essential aspects of circuit design, not optional refinements, reflecting current research and industrial practice. This book further covers variational and hybrid quantum-classical circuits, modern execution workflows on real quantum processors, and the challenges of compilation, calibration, and hardware-aware optimization. It concludes with a forward-looking discussion of scalability, fault tolerance, and emerging directions in quantum circuit design. This book is intended for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in quantum computing. Its emphasis on circuits as engineered objects makes it particularly well suited for readers seeking a deep, practical understanding of how quantum algorithms are actually built and deployed in contemporary quantum computing platforms.

Francisco Orts is a computer scientist whose research focuses on quantum computing, quantum machine learning, and high-performance computing.

Francisco began his career as a software developer before joining the University of Almería as a predoctoral researcher in 2017.
