It harnesses the active ingredients of many well-established therapies, but it is distinct in its conceptualisation of the way our mental health can be disrupted and how that disruption can be resolved efficiently and effectively. MOL is a-diagnostic, making it broadly applicable to any problem, in a way which is destigmatising. It is informed by a rigorous, scientific theory (Perceptual Control Theory, PCT) and has been used in a variety of contexts and in different countries. At the moment, there are four key texts for MOL with some of the texts having been translated into Italian, Korean, Dutch, Finnish, and Spanish. A Japanese translation is currently in progress.

This book is an edited professional book in which MOL therapists describe their experiences of learning and using MOL. Such a range of experiences will illustrate the application and implementation of MOL across a broad range of contexts and for a variety of problems. Each chapter by an MOL therapist has the same structure describing the therapist’s training and experience, the area they work (or worked) in, why they adopted MOL, the benefits they experience in using MOL, problems they had to overcome in adopting MOL, and suggestions and recommendations they would make to aspiring MOL therapists. Professors Carey and Tai provide introductory chapters and a concluding chapter as well as their own descriptions of working as MOL therapists. People interested in finding out more about the application of MOL will encounter rich descriptions illustrating the flexibility and effectiveness of MOL.

Professor Timothy A. Carey is the creator of MOL therapy. He began developing MOL under the tutelage and mentorship of the developer of PCT, William T. Powers. Carey has published extensively about MOL and has used MOL in a variety of contexts including adult primary care, pain management, and an alcohol and other drugs service. He has created an online introductory MOL Training course, an online 6-month group supervision course, and a smartphone app called MindSurf which makes MOL questions widely available and accessible. He conducts training in MOL and PCT internationally and has presented papers at numerous national and international conferences. He has a blog on Psychology Today which applies the principles of PCT to everyday living. The blog is called In Control and has had more than 1.65 million views. Finally, he is the developer of clinical innovations based on PCT including patient-led appointment scheduling and patient-perspective care which can help to make mental health services more accessible, affordable, effective, and efficient (a2e2).

Professor Sara J. Tai has played a key role in the development of Method of Levels (MOL) therapy, working closely with William T. Powers and Timothy A. Carey for over 20 years. She has conducted extensive applied research on Method of Levels (MOL) therapy, building on Perceptual Control Theory (PCT) to improve psychological interventions. With vast clinical experience across inpatient settings, early intervention in psychosis, community mental health, and psychedelic-assisted therapy, she has explored MOL’s impact in diverse real-world contexts. Her research has driven the integration of MOL into mental health services, trauma recovery, and distress interventions. She has developed training programs, digital tools, and workshops, worldwide, to make MOL widely accessible. Through combining research, practice, and innovation, her work has led insights on how control and awareness shape human experience and in demonstrating the effectiveness of MOL across varied therapeutic environments.

Publication Date:

02 April 2027

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032442260

Format:

Hardback
