After graduating from Moscow University in 1970, specializing in television and documentary film, he began his career in Syria, directing documentaries for the General Organization for Cinema, including \u003cem\u003eThe Suleymaniyah Lodge \u003c\/em\u003e(1971) and \u003cem\u003eMelody for Several Seasons\u003c\/em\u003e (1973), and was an assistant director on Nabil Maleh’s \u003cem\u003eThe Leopard\u003c\/em\u003e (1971). He later directed politically engaged documentaries for Palestinian cinema, including \u003cem\u003eNews from Tal al-Zaatar\u003c\/em\u003e (1976) and \u003cem\u003ePalestinian Visions\u003c\/em\u003e (1977).
