Insect frass: A new sustainable agricultural resource
From insect farming to crops
Jorge Poveda
In recent years, especially since 2019, insect frass (or insect excrements) from the insect farming industry has been studied as a potential agricultural resource. Considered a niche sector, insect farming has expanded dramatically in recent years, driven by its low environmental footprint and high efficiency in converting organic waste into valuable products like protein, oil and frass. This book explores the untapped potential of insect frass, a natural byproduct of insect farming that is rich in nutrients, molecules and beneficial microbes. With the increasing demand for organic and regenerative farming practices, insect frass emerges as a powerful, sustainable alternative to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Its application not only improves soil fertility but also supports the long-term health of agricultural ecosystems.
Prof. Dr. Dr. Jorge Poveda has extensive experience in the study of improving crops through the use of sustainable biological strategies, with numerous articles and reviews published in the last five years. Poveda is one of the world's most influential scientists, according to the Stanford University Ranking, from year 2021 onwards. Specifically in the field of insect frass as an agricultural resource, Poveda has been one of the pioneers, since year 2019. Concretely, his research has focused on the use of insect frass from the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) as an agricultural fertilizer, as an inducer of plant defenses against pathogens, and as an enhancer of plant tolerance under abiotic stresses. His research papers and reviews on the use of insect frass as an agricultural resource are Highly Cited Papers by Clarivate, due to their novelty and originality.
