It explores the drivers and mechanisms behind the discrimination, seeking to answer why applicants and employees with a migration background become the objects of “othering” in the first place, how this is enacted, and what can be done to prevent it.

The volume builds on relevant literature on nationalism and racism, presenting findings from six Dutch public organisations to create an explanatory framework on the drivers that produce labour market discrimination. The book uses a triangulation of data, methods, and a comparison of the experiences of applicants, selectors, employees, and supervisors, both with and without a migration background.

The book uses an intersectional perspective to discuss secondary and class-based drivers of discrimination based on personal attributes and communicative behaviour selection and assessment that allow nationalist ethnicization to become operational. It argues that experiences of ethnicization undermine the self-confidence of people with a migration background and thus they perform less on these criteria, which limits their hiring and occupational attainment chances in the eyes of selectors and supervisors.

Findings reveal that professionalization of assessment and selection criteria and procedures works to counter discrimination. The volume concludes by advocating for reform of migration and integration policies and discourses that feed ethnicization. While empirical findings and recommendations are particularly valid for the Dutch context, they may guide and inspire future research in other contexts.

Hans Siebers (1957) has studied history and social sciences at Radboud University Nijmegen, where he received his PhD in 1996, and has worked at several universities in the Netherlands and Guatemala. Until his retirement on 31 December 2024, he served as associate professor at Tilburg University. His expertise focuses on nationalism, racism, ethnicity, class, migration, policy development, exclusion, and discrimination in society and in the labour market. He has carried out research projects on these subjects in both Guatemala and the Netherlands. He has uncovered the drivers and mechanisms of discrimination against people with a migration background in the labour market and at work in several Dutch organizations, including two ministries, two provincial and five municipal administrations, the police, the tax administration, a consultancy firm, and a university of applied sciences. Based on those findings, he gave tailor-made advice to stakeholders that have proven to effectively prevent or thwart discrimination and to provide equal chances and recognition. He has conducted almost 600 in-depth interviews on these subjects and thousands of respondents have completed his questionnaires. His work has been published in books and chapters and in journals like Work, Employment and Society, Sociology, Current Sociology, International Sociology, and Nations and Nationalism. He served four years as editorial board member of Work, Employment and Society. He was a consultant to organizations like the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs, The Dutch Labour Inspectorate, The Netherlands Institute of Human Right, and UNESCO. He has developed master programmes on diversity management, organization studies, and management.

Publication Date:

18 December 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032443311

Format:

Hardback
