Galician Immigrants in Buenos Aires
Community, Associations, and Ethnic Mobilization (1890–1950)
Xosé M. Nuñez Seixas
This book examines the diverse forms of interaction and cultural transfers between the Galician communities in Argentina and Cuba, and the socio-political movements that developed in northwest Spain during the first half of the twentieth century. On the eve of the First World War, Buenos Aires and Havana boasted the two largest urban communities of Iberian Galicians in the world, making these cities a core of Galician politics and culture within the diaspora community in Latin America.
This book demonstrates how the networks of Galician local associations in Buenos Aires and Havana influenced the development of social mobilisation in their home country. It combines micro-historical and local perspectives with transnational and global history approaches, offering insights into the day-to-day workings of diasporic communities, as well as their interactions and entanglements with their counties of origin. Offering the first book-length study of Galician migration, this work advances research in migration history and contemporary diasporic studies against the broader context of other migrant communities in Latin America.
