Crime and Justice in Digital Society

Cyber Criminology and Victimology

Theory, Case Studies, and New Frontiers

K. Jaishankar

Social Science / Criminology

This book provides a comprehensive examination of cybercrime, cyber victimization, and justice in an increasingly digital world. Bringing together the fields of cyber criminology and cyber victimology, it explores how technological change has transformed criminal behavior, victimization, regulation, and social responses to harm. Drawing on decades of scholarship, the volume consolidates key theoretical developments while addressing emerging challenges posed by digital technologies and online environments.

Moving from foundational concepts to contemporary challenges, the book examines the distinctive characteristics of digital environments and their implications for criminal behavior and victim experiences. It explores the theoretical frameworks that have emerged to explain crime in cyberspace, with particular attention to space transition theory (STT) and its continuing relevance for understanding the relationship between online and offline behavior. The volume also considers how digital technologies are reshaping systems of accountability, governance, and justice, raising new questions about surveillance, regulation, platform responsibility, and victim protection.

By connecting theory, empirical case analysis, and contemporary policy concerns, the book demonstrates how cybercrime and cyber victimization must be understood within the broader social, technological, and transnational contexts in which they occur. It offers valuable insights for scholars, students, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to understand the changing nature of crime and justice in the digital age.
