Work and Welfare in Europe
Platformizing Domestic Work
Work Organisation and Worker Protection Across Europe.
Ivana Pais
This Open Access book examines how digital labour platforms are reshaping home care and domestic work across Europe, with important consequences for workers, households, and welfare systems. Moving beyond the idea of a single platform model, it reveals a diverse landscape of organisational forms whose effects on job quality and worker protection depend on how labour is organised and how platforms interact with national institutions. Drawing on case studies from Denmark, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, it examines four organisational models: marketplaces, digital agencies, on-demand platforms, and regulated marketplaces. It explores how these models operate within different care regimes, labour market institutions, industrial relations systems, and regulatory frameworks. This book shows how organisational differences shape job quality, employment formalisation, migrant workers’ experiences, fairness, and collective representation, offering a new perspective on platform work and the changing organisation of care in Europe.
Ivana Pais is Professor of Economic Sociology at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Italy, and Director of TRAILab. She is co-editor of Sociologica and a member of Italy’s National Council for Economics and Labour. Her research focuses on digital labour and platform organisations.
