Transcreating Heraldry DNA
Intersemiotic Translation in Greek Military Shield Badges
George Damaskinidis
This book examines how the Hellenic Army uses heraldry to translate history, mission, and values into visual identity. Drawing on 77 official shield badges, it shows how words, images, colours, and symbols work together to communicate institutional identity, military tradition, and cultural memory across uniforms, vehicles, buildings, documents, and digital media. The book moves from the foundations of intersemiotic translation and multimodal social semiotics to a systematic method for analysing military emblems. It then develops the concept of "Heraldry DNA" to explain the recurring patterns that make an emblem system recognisable while allowing individual units to remain distinct. Case studies demonstrate how mottos, motifs, colour choices, and design conventions express continuity, sacrifice, expertise, territorial guardianship, and collective memory. The book offers a clear framework for researchers in translation studies, semiotics, visual communication, military studies, branding, and institutional identity.
