Matilda Chaplin Ayrton (1846–1883) joined the “Edinburgh Seven” as a pioneer for women’s medical education. Midwife, artist, author, and anthropological researcher, she accompanied William to Japan and finally earned her medical license shortly before her early death of tuberculosis. As a groundbreaking female electrical engineer, Hertha Ayrton (1854–1923) was the first woman elected to the Institution of Electrical Engineers. In 1906, she also won the Royal Society’s Hughes Medal despite having been barred from becoming a Fellow. After William’s death she focused on women’s issues where her scientific renown and financial support gave her prominence in the suffragist movement. With his flamboyance, imagination, and witty eloquence, William Edward Ayrton (1847–1908) was late Victorian Britain’s energetic pioneer of practical electricity. With Hertha, he championed the establishment of the electrical engineering profession in Britain by painting a positive, socially acceptable view of electricity. They achieved this through public talks attended by thousands, offering technical education to a broad demographic, and by developing and commercializing innovative technologies. Using archival and published sources, This work traces the family members from their relatively humble (and in William’s case, bizarre) backgrounds, through their formative struggles, to positions of prominence. Together and separately, they blazed new paths in science and technology that shaped succeeding generations. This book is of interest to readers interested in the history of technical education and electrical engineering, pioneering female scientists, and women’s education and rights.

Richard Hornsey is a University Professor in the Lassonde School of Engineering at York University, Toronto.
