Navigating Contemporary Complexity: Transdisciplinary Approaches to Economic, Social, Political, and Environmental Challenges
Mohamed Nemiche | Mohammed ESSAAIDI | Reda Benkirane
This proceedings volume provides a rigorous exploration of current research in complex systems and complexity science, featuring peer-reviewed contributions presented at the World Conference on Complex Systems (WCCS26). It highlights how computational modeling and transdisciplinary approaches can be used to understand and address the economic, social, political, and environmental challenges that characterize an increasingly interconnected world.
The volume brings together research on agent-based modeling, complex networks, artificial intelligence for complex systems, socio-ecological dynamics, urban and territorial modeling, collective behavior, and intelligent infrastructures. Rather than treating these topics as isolated technical developments, the book presents them as complementary frameworks for analyzing systems whose behavior emerges from interconnected and interdependent components. Many of today’s most pressing challenges arise within such systems, where feedback loops, nonlinearity, and multi-scale interactions generate outcomes that cannot be easily predicted or explained through conventional approaches.
The contributions demonstrate how complexity science combines conceptual understanding with advanced computational methods to investigate these phenomena and support decision-making in uncertain and dynamic environments. A central theme throughout the volume is the relationship between theory and practice. The chapters present modeling frameworks, empirical studies, and hybrid computational approaches that translate fundamental concepts of complexity into practical tools and actionable insights.
By bringing together perspectives from computer science, systems engineering, economics, environmental studies, and the social sciences, the book creates a truly transdisciplinary platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange. Simulation and computational experimentation feature prominently as essential tools for investigating systemic risk, resilience, adaptation, and long-term sustainability.
This volume is intended for researchers, graduate students, and professionals working in complex systems, computational social science, artificial intelligence, sustainability studies, systems modeling, and interdisciplinary applied research. It offers both a comprehensive overview of current developments and valuable insights into the methods shaping the future of complexity science.
Mohamed Nemiche is a researcher specializing in complex systems, computational modeling, and interdisciplinary science. He serves as President of the Moroccan Society of
Interdisciplinary Studies (MSIS) and is the Founder and Chair of the World Conference on Complex Systems (WCCS), a leading international platform for complexity science research.
His work focuses on agent-based modeling, social simulation, cellular automata, network dynamics, and complex adaptive systems, with applications in epidemiology, tourism, urban
systems, and social sciences. He has also guest-edited and co-edited special issues and volumes on complexity science, contributing significantly to international collaboration in
computational social science and complex systems.
Mohamed Essaaidi is a globally recognized scholar, academic leader, and expert in digital transformation, engineering education, and emerging technologies. He was CEO of the
Moroccan School of Engineering Sciences (EMSI) Group, served as Chief of Party of the Interactive Digital Center Morocco at UM6P, and was Dean of ENSIAS at Mohammed V
University in Rabat. He founded and chaired the IEEE Morocco Section and held several leadership positions within IEEE worldwide. His research interests include artificial
intelligence, smart cities, digital innovation, ICT, and sustainable development. He has authored over 200 publications and several books and served as an international expert for
UNESCO, ITU, ICESCO, the EU, and the UN. His work in education and digital transformation earned him the IEEE William E. Sayle II Award for Achievement in Education.
Reda Benkirane is a sociologist, anthropologist, author, and leading figure in complexity studies. He chairs the Chair of Complexities ∞ Humanities at Mohammed VI Polytechnic
University (UM6P), fostering dialogue between complexity sciences, humanities, and social sciences. His research examines complexity, uncertainty, emergence, and systemic
interdependence in contemporary societies, emphasizing transdisciplinarity, knowledge systems, cultural transformation, and global challenges. Through publications, conferences, and
international initiatives, he promotes complexity as a framework to understand social, political, technological, and environmental transformations in an interconnected world.
