The content focuses on image acquisition - a core task for radiographers, medical radiation technologists, clinical scientists, and other medical imaging equipment operators. Each chapter highlights key AI applications across modalities, with emphasis on AI-enabled solutions for image acquisition and Image-Guided Interventions. These include innovations in patient positioning, safety, comfort, image quality optimization, and modality-specific topics such as radiation reduction in CT, breast compression in mammography, and repeatability in ultrasound. Emerging developments in each modality are also explored.

As AI becomes embedded in clinical practice, new competencies are emerging for imaging professionals and more specifically for radiographers. Image acquisition involves radiographers, clinical scientists, researchers, and doctoral students who rely on medical imaging equipment. A thorough understanding of AI, both technical and practical, empowers practitioners, researchers, and students to enhance patient care, improve interdisciplinary collaboration, and recognize their responsibilities when using AI. Building strong professional relationships within the AI ecosystem will further improve service delivery and ensure optimal patient outcomes in a future where AI plays a central role in diagnostics and care.

Professor Christina Malamateniou

Dr Malamateniou is a diagnostic MRI radiographer, an Associate Professor of technology enabled care and the Director of the CRRaG research group.
