Rethinking Education in the Age of Generative AI

Innovations in Paradigm and Strategies for Developing Education 5.0

Boris Aberšek | Igor Pesek | Andrej Flogi

Technology & Engineering / Telecommunications

This book explores the complexity of the relationship between humans and intelligent systems in both the natural and cyber worlds. The book focuses on humans as social beings, human intelligence and its behavioral forms, critical thinking and decision-making, and the transformation of society in interaction with various forms of artificial intelligence, especially in the field of education. The book analyzes in more detail the cognitive, affective, and ethical consequences of using virtual learning environments and artificial intelligence in education and examine the guidelines for further developing education (Education 5.0) in modern society. All basic ideas and proposed solutions are systematically presented in algorithmic form and in the form of flowcharts, which clearly and concisely summarize the proposed solutions and indicate possible development directions. A complex, interdisciplinary view of experts from various fields on the development of society and education serves as the basis for further planning of educational development and guidelines for societal development. This unique and comprehensive framework for shaping education of the future benefits researchers, teachers, and developers of educational systems, as well as graduate and postgraduate students, engineers, and other professionals in the fields of artificial intelligence and the implementation of AI solutions in society and education.

Prof. ddr. Boris Aberšek has 14 years of industrial experience and approximately 30 years of experience in education. His first Ph.D. is from the area of Mechanical Engineering (1993), connected with optimization and visual presentation on the basis of expert systems and artificial intelligence (genetic algorithms). His second Ph.D. is from the area of philosophy of science (2014), connected with the philosophy of mind, cognitive science, and studying the connection between human and artificial intelligence. Basic knowledge areas include philosophy of science and artificial intelligence, cognitive science, as well as engineering calculation, fracture mechanics and fatigue, calculation of service life, expert system and artificial intelligence. His recent research interest is mainly connected to philosophy of science and philosophy of mind, cognitive science, human-computer interaction—especially related to the learning process—comparison of human and artificial intelligence, and the use of artificial intelligence in the educational process.

Igor Pesek, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics, is a professor in the field of computer science, a leader in digitization and the introduction of modern AI-based approaches to learning and teaching. He is also the Head of the Sector for Digitization in Education at the Slovenian Ministry of Education.

Andrej Flogie, Ph.D., Associate Professor at the University of Maribor, Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics, is a professor of didactics, technology, and engineering, a manager of many educational innovation projects, and a leading expert in developing and preparing modern learning environments.
