Mamdooh Abdelhameed Abdelmottlep

Social Science / Criminology

This textbook offers a comprehensive introduction to policing as both an academic discipline and a professional field. Drawing on examples and experiences from around the world, it examines how police institutions have evolved, how they are organized and governed, and how they respond to the complex security challenges of contemporary societies. The book explores core themes such as police legitimacy, accountability, leadership, ethics, education, and community relations, while also addressing key areas of practice including criminal investigation, forensic science, intelligence-led policing, counterterrorism, and traffic policing.

Reflecting the book's international perspective, it examines major approaches to assessing police and internal security performance, including the World Internal Security and Police Index (WISPI) and the Global Police and Security Index (GPSI). These frameworks provide readers with tools for understanding how police organizations can be evaluated and compared across different national contexts, while raising broader questions about organizational effectiveness, reform, and public trust.

The book also explores the growing impact of technology on policing, including artificial intelligence, data analytics, biometrics, and security forecasting. By combining foundational theory with comparative research, empirical evidence, and contemporary developments, Foundations of Police Sciences equips readers with the knowledge and analytical tools needed to understand policing in an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world.

This textbook is intended for upper undergraduate and graduate students in police science, criminology, criminal justice, and security studies.
