Sustainable Corrosion Inhibitors for the Oil and Gas Industry

Technology & Engineering / Chemical & Biochemical

Pipeline systems in the oil and gas industry are crucial for transporting crude oil and refined petroleum products. However, pipeline surfaces are continuously exposed to impurities and corrosion, and environmental toxicity limits the use of commercial corrosion inhibitors to reduce corrosion damage. This book introduces effective, sustainable alternatives and provides an overview of recent advances in corrosion management. Organized into two parts, the first covers the fundamentals of corrosion, including types of corrosion, control methods, environmental influences, material selection, and economic considerations. The second part focuses on specific inhibitors to various kinds of corrosion, including sweet and sour corrosion, refinery operations, high-temperature environments, microbiologically influenced corrosion, vapor-phase inhibitors, and smart controlled-release systems. Additionally, it highlights the application of machine learning in corrosion management.

Sustainable Corrosion Inhibitors for the Oil and Gas Industry is aimed at a broad audience and is a valuable resource for practicing engineers, applied chemists, researchers, and graduate students in corrosion engineering, process engineering, oil and gas engineering, and related fields, and serves as a user-friendly guide for product design, process development, and material selection.

  • Provides an in-depth look at sustainable inhibitor applications for solving oil and gas industry corrosion challenges;
  • Explains the impacts of corrosion on the environment, sustainability, governance (ESG), and economies;
  • Explains machine learning, material selection, and AI use in the oil and gas industries in an easy-to-understand way.

Omotayo Sanni, D.Eng., is a researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria, where she collaborates with a multidisciplinary team. Dr. Sanni obtained a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology. Her expertise is demonstrated through reputable, peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations at national and international conferences, as well as her role as a co-author of the book Sustainable Corrosion Inhibition Using Agricultural Waste: An ESG Strategy (CRC Press, 2025).

Michael Olawale Daramola, Ph.D., is a Professor and Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. He is a global scholar with training, teaching, and research experience from the Netherlands, France, the United States, South Africa, Singapore, Ghana, and Nigeria. As a chartered engineer with the Engineering Council of the UK and a COREN-registered engineer in Nigeria, he brings extensive expertise to his field. Prof. Daramola's research focuses primarily on sustainable energy and the environment, with an emphasis on nanomaterials in waste treatment and valorization. His work has led to innovative concepts for sustainable solutions in the energy and environmental sectors. Since 2021, he has consistently ranked among the world's top 2% of scientists. He serves on the editorial boards of several international journals, including ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering and Materials Today: Proceedings. Additionally, he was an Associate Editor for Chemical Engineering Communications from 2016 to 2020. Prof. Daramola is the co-editor of the books Sustainable Engineering: Concepts and Practices (Springer, 2024), Valorization of Biomass to Value-Added Commodities (Springer, 2020), and Xylenes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Physicochemical Properties (Nova Science Publishers, 2013). He also contributes to national standards through his involvement with the South African Bureau of Standards' Technical Committees on carbon dioxide and circular economy. He has mentored 80 graduate students and over 25 early-career researchers, contributing significantly to engineering knowledge with over 300 publications, including one patent and fifteen book chapters.

Samuel Ayodele Iwarere, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. He holds an MSc (Eng) in Chemical Engineering from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), specializing in Phase Equilibria Measurements related to Chemical Thermodynamics and Separation Technology. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, focusing on Plasma Technology, in partnership with the Plasma Group at Mines Paris Tech, France, under the guidance of Professors Deresh Ramjugernath and Laurent Fulcheri. Prof. Iwarere completed three years as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UKZN's Thermodynamics Research Unit (2014-2016) and led a Water Research Commission-funded Chemical Engineering project at UKZN from 2017 to June 2020. He joined the University of Pretoria in July 2020 as a Senior Researcher until December 2022 under the Future Leaders – African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellowship from the UK Government through the Royal Society, and was appointed a Senior Lecturer in January 2023. His research expertise encompasses plasma science and engineering, with a focus on challenges within the water-energy-food nexus, aligning with Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6, 7, 12, 13, and 17. Prof. Iwarere is recognized as a C2-rated researcher by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team in various funded research projects. He is also a co-editor of the book Sustainable Engineering: Concepts and Practices (Springer, 2024).
