Blackness, Identity and English for Academic Purposes
Olive Nabukeera
This book places Blackness at the centre of a critical examination of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), challenging normative assumptions about academic language education. Situated primarily within UK higher education, it explores how race, identity and institutional power shape belonging, legitimacy, knowledge and pedagogical practice.
Drawing together autobiographical reflection, accounts from Black practitioners and academics, and scholarship from applied linguistics, TESOL, Black Studies, Sociology and decolonial thought, the book traces the relationship between Blackness, whiteness and the institutional structures within which EAP operates. It examines questions of representation, racialised professional experience, and the possibilities and limits of decolonising academic communication in the Global North. Throughout, critical reflection activities invite readers to connect these questions to their own teaching, professional roles and institutional contexts. The book will be of particular interest to scholars, practitioners and postgraduate students in EAP, applied linguistics, TESOL, higher education and decolonial education.
Olive Nabukeera is Lecturer in English for Academic Purposes at the University of Leeds, UK. She holds a doctorate in TESOL. Her research examines race, Black identities and decoloniality in English language teaching and higher education, particularly how institutional and disciplinary norms shape the experiences of racialised practitioners and students.
