Generating Digital Hardware Designs with Generative AI

Jason Blocklove | Hammond Pearce | Benjamin Tan | Siddharth Garg | Ramesh Karri

Technology & Engineering / Electronics / Circuits / General

This book demystifies the process of using artificial intelligence to generate high quality digital hardware designs. It is written at a level useful for students, educators, and enthusiasts. The authors explore how the latest developments in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be harnessed to provide this automation, converting specifications in plain language into the Verilog hardware description language. They present an abridged history of these AI, and provide hands-on case studies and experiments showing how practitioners and researchers can adopt them for their digital hardware design tasks. Coverage includes practical techniques for prompt engineering and methods for AI ‘rigging’, so readers can leverage AI to design their own custom computing chips.

Jason Blocklove is Ph.D. Candidate in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at New York University. He has previously worked at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab where he worked on digital hardware and embedded system design. His research focuses on additive manufacturing security, leveraging generative AI models for hardware design, and security analysis of AI models for generating hardware. He co-founded and continues to organize the annual AI Hardware Attack (AHA!) Challenge at NYU's CSAW event and other conferences.Hammond Pearce is a Senior Lecturer (a.k.a. Associate Professor) at UNSW Sydney's School of Computer Science and Engineering. Previously he has also worked as a Research Assistant Professor at NYU Tandon's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and in the NYU Center for Cybersecurity. His main research focus involves the intersection of AI and security in hardware and software systems, including embedded systems, social networks, cyber-physical systems, and additive manufacturing. He also examines the implications of Large Language Models (LLMs) on design processes in this space. He received the B.E. (Hons) degree in Computer Systems Engineering in 2014 and the Ph.D. in Computer Systems Engineering in 2020 both from the University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand. In 2019 he took part in the NASA International Internship Programme and worked at NASA Ames in California. As part of his research he won the Cybersecurity Award 2023 for the Best Machine Learning and Security Paper, distinguished paper awards at IEEE S&P and EuroS&P, and won the inaugural Efabless AI Generated Open-Source Silicon Design Challenge. He co-founded and is the Managing Director of the Digital Lies & Cyber Literacy Foundation, and is also an associate editor for IEEE TIFS and ACM TODAES and is on the editorial board for ACM Books.Benjamin Tan is a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Calgary in the Department of Electrical and Software Engineering and holder of a UCalgary Research Excellence Chair (Tier 2). Previously, he was with New York University, where he was a Postdoctoral Associate and then Research Assistant Professor affiliated with the NYU Center for Cybersecurity. He received the B.E. (Hons.) degree in computer systems engineering and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, in 2014 and 2019, respectively. His research interests include computer engineering, hardware security, and electronic design automation.Siddharth Garg is currently a Professor with New York University, where he joined as an Assistant Professor in 2014. Prior to this, he was an Assistant Professor with the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, Canada. He received the B.Tech. degree in electrical engineering in 2014 from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, USA, in 2009. His current research interests include computer engineering, and more particularly in secure, reliable, and energy efficient computing. He was a recipient of the NSF Career Award in 2015, and the paper awards from the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy in 2016, the USENIX Security Symposium in 2013, the Semiconductor Research Consortium TECHCON in 2010, and the International Symposium on Quality in Electronic Design in 2009. He was listed in popular science magazine’s annual list of “Brilliant 10” researchers.
