Worked Exercises in Aircraft Propulsion
Compressible Flow, Jet Engines and Related Components
Francesco De Vanna
This book collects worked exercises in aircraft propulsion, a companion to a graduate course in the subject. It is for students in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering who have met the theory and now want to put it to work. The book is arranged in four parts. Three chapters lay out the tools: compressible flow, the performance of a propulsive stream, and axial turbomachinery. Five chapters take whole engines through their cycles, and five more open them one component at a time. Every chapter opens with the relations it will need, numbered and boxed, each closing by naming the exercises that put it to work; every solution runs in short steps that name the relation used and box the answer. The numbers are meant to be reproduced with a pen, a paper and a calculator. Every exercise carries stars. One star is a single relation applied once. Two stars chain several, and the difficulty is the order they come in. Three stars ask for a choice as well as a calculation. The last part holds ten comprehensive problems, one per engine configuration, each carrying a whole engine from freestream to exhaust and then opening one of its machines.
Francesco De Vanna is a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor in Aerospace Propulsion at the Department of Industrial Engineering of the University of Padova, where he teaches Aircraft Propulsion in the M.Sc. programme in Aerospace Engineering. His research focuses primarily on the numerical investigation of compressible flows for aerospace applications. He is the lead developer of URANOS, an open-source flow solver for compressible-flow simulations. This book brings together ten years of experience teaching exercise classes in Gas Dynamics, Aerodynamics, and Fluid Machinery for Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering students.
