Cultural Wisdoms on Spirituality

Reframing Death and Wellbeing

Natalie Tobert

Religion / Spirituality

This book critically examines contemporary understandings of mental health and the tensions surrounding the previously dominant Western psychiatric frameworks. Against a backdrop of growing debate about the limitations of conventional approaches to mental distress and crisis experiences, the author explores emerging cultural perspectives that seek to better address the needs of people with lived experience, their families and carers, as well as mental health professionals who are rethinking established models of care.
Drawing on insights from scholars, clinicians, advocates, and individuals who have publicly shared their own experiences, the volume considers how mental distress is increasingly being reframed in both public discourse and healthcare practice. It examines the role of social media communities, evolving clinical perspectives, and alternative frameworks for understanding human suffering and wellbeing.

The book also engages with the perspectives of Indigenous, refugee, and formerly colonized communities, many of whom challenge the universal application of Western psychiatric categories to diverse human experiences. By highlighting different understandings of consciousness, distress, and healing, the author invites readers to reconsider assumptions that have long shaped mental health practice. Advocating a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, the volume argues that, alongside appropriate assessment for organic causes of distress, practitioners should consider collaborative responses that integrate social, psychological, cultural, and spiritual dimensions of care. In doing so, the book offers a timely contribution to ongoing debates about the future of mental health theory and practice.

Dr Natalie Tobert is an independent Medical Anthropologist who conducted three original ethnographic fieldwork projects: one in Sudan for her doctorate, and two in India (the first on the ethnography of architecture, the second on mental wellbeing). She also undertook research with the Alister Hardy Archive, on the relationship between mystical, spiritual, and religious experiences and mental health.  She teaches in medical schools, hospitals, universities and healthcare trusts, and developed a Training Manual on Cultural Equalities for frontline healthcare providers. As Education Director of Aethos Training, Natalie designed a programme of 10 weekly seminars covering “Cultural Diversity, Mental Wellbeing, and Spirituality”. Her course modules support integrated health, explore multiple narratives and plural ways of understanding consciousness. During the last couple of years, her teaching has included sessions for NHS staff at NELFT (North East London Foundation Trust), several workshops for both The Abdul Mageed Educational Trust, and the Ecstatic Mysticism project, as well as presenting her own online course: Ancient Wisdoms.  She also collaborated on training events with the Sri Aurobindo Society and NAMAH journal in India.  She has facilitated international workshop seminars in the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and the USA (CIIS - California Institute of Integral Studies). She is a practising polymath and an artist, exhibiting her ceramic sculpture and paintings in galleries.
