Hundreds of metal bands around the globe have contributed to a growing catalogue of thousands of songs, including scores of concept albums, that bring the distant past to life through musical styles and instrumentation, song lyrics, album artwork, music videos, photography, stage performance, and merchandise. The chapters in this edited collection aim to not only explain how the premodern past resonates with, and is interpreted by metal artists, but also the sociopolitical dimensions of metal’s reception of the ancient, medieval, and precolonial worlds. Far from an apolitical hobby interest, the past is appropriated as a locus of identity, gender, race, and heritage framed in opposition to the present. Scholars across fields like popular music studies, classical and mideval studies, sociology, and literature apply their disciplines' critical lenses to explore how heavy metal music and culture has taken up premodern histories from around the world. This volume focuses on identities and cultures across the spectrum of heavy metal music, including feminism, masculinity, language, literature, and religion. Topics studied include disability, paganism, Mesoamerican mythology,

Jeremy Swist is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics at Grand Valley State University, having previously taught at Miami University and Brandeis University. Her research specialises in the history of interpretation of the Bible, and the reception of texts through arts and literature—most recently contributing to a volume on the science fiction works of Octavia Butler. She is a scholar of Metal Music Studies engaging in research and collaborative projects on gender and the Bible in metal lyrics, fandom and material culture. She works both inside and outside the academy to provide tools of good biblical scholarship to students and community groups alike, and her work encourages constructive dialogue about these texts in places where they are often misunderstood or misused.

Shamma Boyarin is an Assistant Professor in the English Department at the University of Victoria. He is also appointed to the Religion, Culture, and Society Program. His research and teaching interests span medieval Hebrew and Arabic literature and the intersection of religion, and pop culture, with a special focus on heavy metal. Through this focus he explores ways in which metal engages with religious ideas and draws from the Middle Ages as a source for inspiration, sometimes as part of the problematic role metal plays in White Nationalist or Supremacist movements.

Publication Date:

12 April 2027

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Palgrave Macmillan

ISBN-13:

9783032455925

Format:

Hardback
