Wildlife-based Tourism Economy in Southern Africa

Prospects and Challenges for Sustainable Development

Moren T. Stone | Lesego S. Stone

Social Science / Human Geography

This book assembles data and evidence to illustrate the value of wildlife to economies and, through this, emboldens investment in this important economic asset. It explores the impacts of wildlife on Southern African economies and provides directions for its design, planning, and management. The book defines, classifies, provides a framework for wildlife planning and management, and explains why wildlife resources are important for building local, national, and regional economies. The book argues that wildlife is a valuable resource that needs to be exploited with conservation in mind, as these objectives are inseparable. It also posits that the potential for developing new wildlife tourism ventures exists, but sustainable business approaches must be considered. It is a must-read for researchers, students, wildlife and tourism development stakeholders, policy makers, and all those working in conservation, political and wildlife ecology, wildlife and tourism, and community development.
