Emphasizing understanding before calculation, it helps students develop the analytical thinking and problem-solving skills needed to solve real engineering problems.

Using a rigorous analytical approach, the book explores the fundamental principles governing the motion of particles and rigid bodies. Mathematical formulations and symbolic methods are used to establish relationships between kinematic and kinetic variables, revealing the underlying patterns and characteristics of motion. Worked examples demonstrate the analysis of linear, angular, and general motion in one-, two-, and three-dimensional systems, while illustrating the logical process of mathematical reasoning and deduction. By integrating physics and mathematics into a coherent framework, the text equips students with the confidence and skills to formulate and solve complex dynamics problems.

Dr. Tzuyang Yu is Full Professor (Structural Engineering) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UML). He received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in the field of structural engineering and materials. While his doctoral research regards remote electromagnetic imaging of concrete structures, theoretical and applied mechanics has a special place in his heart. Dr. Yu is a recipient of the 2008 ASNT Fellowship Award (Cleveland, Ohio), 2009 Outstanding Alumni of NYUST (Yunlin, Taiwan), 2010 JSPS Fellowship Award (Tokyo, Japan), 2017 Donald Leitch Award (UML), 2021 ASNT Faculty Award (Cleveland, Ohio), and 2022 Acorn Innovation Award (Boston, Massachusetts). He is an SPIE Fellow and a member to ASCE, ACI, IEEE, ASNT, SEM, AAAS, and Sigma Xi. His research has been sponsored by NIST, AFRL, NSF, DOE, DOD, USDOT, UMass S&T Office, AFFOA, NextFlex, MassDOT, and CSX Transportation. He is an author of two books, three book chapters, and more than 140 journal and conference papers. He has also delivered more than 107 invited talks (excluding conference presentations) in academia, government, and industry. He teaches Dynamics to undergraduate students and Structural Dynamics, Structural Stability, and Inspection and Monitoring of Civil Infrastructure to graduate students at UML. He is also interested in applied mathematics, applied physics, and the interaction between mechanics and electromagnetism.

Publication Date:

06 April 2027

Publisher:

Springer Nature Switzerland

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9783032457356

Format:

Hardback
