Evolution and the End of Humanity
Life Beyond Darwin
Jay Silverstein
This book reimagines evolutionary theory for the 21st century—integrating biology, complexity science, and ethics to propose a new paradigm for understanding life, intelligence, and the future of humanity. It challenges the limits of Neo-Darwinism and gene-centric models, offering a bold, interdisciplinary framework that embraces emergence, information systems, and conscious agency.
Drawing on decades of research in anthropology, systems theory, and evolutionary science, Dr. Jay E. Silverstein explores how traditional evolutionary thinking must evolve to meet the challenges of our time. From the rise of artificial intelligence and genetic engineering to the ethical dilemmas of human agency, this book argues that science must move beyond passive description and take responsibility for shaping the future. With clarity and depth, Silverstein revisits the foundations of Darwinian thought, critiques its modern extensions, and introduces a unified theory of evolution that connects molecules to minds, and biology to morality. This is not just a scientific treatise—it is a call for consilience: a synthesis of knowledge across disciplines to guide humanity through an age of accelerating complexity.
For readers of E.O. Wilson, Richard Dawkins, Melanie Mitchell, and Yuval Noah Harari, this book offers a visionary roadmap for the science of tomorrow—rigorous, ethical, and deeply human.
Dr. Jay E. Silverstein is an anthropological archaeologist, evolutionary theorist, and interdisciplinary researcher whose work spans continents, cultures, and scientific paradigms. He holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Pennsylvania State University and he has taught at Penn State, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Tyumen, Russia, and currently serves as a Senior Lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, where he teaches forensic bioarchaeology and supervises postgraduate research. His research integrates archaeology, ecological adaptation, and evolutionary science to explore the deep structures of human behavior, conflict, and cultural transformation.
Dr. Silverstein is internationally recognized as the Director of the Tell Timai Archaeological Project in Egypt, where his excavations of the ancient city of Thmouis have uncovered significant discoveries, including a lost temples of Pharaoh Psammuthes and the Goddess Isis-Arsinoë, the ancient Mendesian perfume industry, and physical evidence of Great Rebellion of Rosetta Stone fame. He is currently working in partnership with Dr. Yehia Gad of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization to explore the ancient genetic identity of victims of the rebellion and the patrilineal connection to the 29th and 30th Dynasty rulers of Egypt. He is a National Geographic Explorer and has appeared in various media productions. His career also includes over 17 years of service with the U.S. government, leading archaeological missions to recover missing military personnel (MIAs) in remote regions such as Vietnam, North Korea, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands. In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Silverstein has received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the U.S. Department of Defense and a Military Achievement Award from the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) for his leadership in developing an enterprise GIS system used in the search for over 80,000 missing U.S. service members. A former police officer turned academic, Dr. Silverstein has also conducted fieldwork at iconic sites such as Sutton Hoo, San Lorenzo, and Tikal. His theoretical work challenges reductionist models in evolutionary biology, advocating for a paradigm that incorporates emergence, information theory, and conscious agency.
