Environmental Remediation
Water, Air and Soil through Conventional and Remote Sensing Approaches
Prem Chandra Pandey | Virat Khanna | Chandra Sekhar Dwivedi
The urgent need for environmental remediation cannot be overlooked, as there is a rapid escalation in pollution, climate change, and ecosystem degradation. Industrial activities, agricultural practices, and urban development have significantly compromised the quality of water, air, and soil, posing severe risks to human health and biodiversity. Addressing these challenges requires innovative and sustainable solutions to restore and protect our natural resources. This book provides a comprehensive guide to the principles and practices of environmental remediation, with a particular focus on wastewater treatment, wetland restoration, and soil regeneration.
In this book, a wide range of topics essential for understanding and implementing environmental remediation strategies is covered. Dedicated sections cover important themes of wastewater treatment, wetland restoration, and soil regeneration. Each section provides an in-depth analysis of advanced technologies, sustainable practices, and innovative approaches tailored to address the specific challenges associated with each area. The discussions include both theoretical foundations and practical applications, ensuring a holistic understanding of the subject matter. Through detailed case studies and real-world examples, readers will gain insights into successful remediation projects and learn about the potential pitfalls and best practices in the field.
This book is designed for a diverse audience, including environmental scientists, engineers, policymakers, and students keen to explore environmental remediation. Readers will benefit from the comprehensive coverage of topics, gaining not only technical knowledge but also an appreciation of the socio-economic and regulatory dimensions of environmental remediation. Ultimately, this book serves as a vital resource for anyone committed to advancing the field of environmental sustainability and contributing to a healthier, more resilient planet.
Dr Prem Chandra Pandey is an Assistant Professor at Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, with more than 16 years of experience in geospatial technologies, natural resource monitoring, and environmental research. He obtained his PhD from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, where his research focused on species diversity and mapping in Mediterranean forests using Aerial Hyperspectral data. He also served as a Research Scientist at Tel Aviv University. He holds an M.Sc. and an M.Tech in Environment and Remote Sensing. Dr Pandey’s research focuses on applying advanced remote sensing and geospatial technologies to environmental and natural resource monitoring. His expertise includes multispectral and hyperspectral remote sensing, UAV/drone-based observations, LiDAR, and cloud-computing platforms for ecosystem assessment and modelling. His research integrates satellite and drone datasets for forest structure and species mapping, biodiversity assessment, biomass estimation, wetland monitoring, precision agriculture, land-use and land-cover analysis, and climate-related environmental studies. His work emphasises data-driven environmental monitoring, sustainable ecosystem management, and conservation planning in ecologically sensitive regions, including the Himalayas and wetlands. He is currently involved in multiple projects on Ramsar sites and wetland monitoring, including studies of Chilika Lake and other natural resource systems, supported by agencies such as the DST and the SERB, Government of India. He has received several prestigious awards and fellowships, including the Commonwealth Award (UK), INSPIRE Fellowship 2010, Malviya Gold medal, MHRD and UGC Fellowships, IT Award, Young Investigator Award, SERB-SRG, and SERB-NPDF (Government of India). He received the Editor of Excellence Award & Author Services in 2025 and 2026 from Scientific Reports. Dr Pandey has also been recognised among the world’s Top 2% Scientists in the Stanford University Global Ranking for 2025 and 2026 consecutively. He has published 100+ Scopus-indexed peer-reviewed research papers, edited 10+ books, contributed numerous book chapters, and presented his work at national and international conferences. He is a life member of the Indian Society of Geomatics and the Indian Society of Remote Sensing. He has also served as a member of the IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management (2017–2021; 2022–2025), the International Society of Precision Agriculture, and the Society of Wetland Scientists. In addition, he serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Sustainable Forestry (Taylor & Francis), Scientific Reports (Springer Nature Portfolio), Scientific Review (Springer Nature Portfolio), and Discover Sustainability (Springer); is on the editorial boards of Sustainable Development (Wiley) and Geocarto International (Taylor & Francis); and is a Topic Editor for Remote Sensing. Dr Pandey focuses his research on remote sensing for natural resources, including forestry, agriculture, urban studies, and environmental modelling and climate change.
