Enhanced Non-Contact Wireless Sensing with Commercial Devices

Principles and System Design

Lili Chen | Xiaojiang Chen | Ling Wang

Technology & Engineering / Telecommunications

This book provides a comprehensive and accessible introduction to enhanced non-contact wireless sensing using widely available commercial devices such as Wi-Fi, RFID, and LoRa. The authors demonstrate how everyday wireless signals can be transformed into powerful tools for sensing human activities, health conditions, and environmental changes without requiring wearable devices or cameras. The book explains the fundamental principles behind wireless sensing and addresses key practical challenges—including sensing blind spots, limited coverage, reduced accuracy in complex environments, and hardware-induced instability—through a unified framework that integrates signal processing, modeling, and system design. By bridging theory with real-world implementation, the book offers readers clear insights and practical guidance for developing scalable, robust, and privacy-friendly sensing systems for next-generation intelligent applications.
