Malaria is still a major killer, taking more than 1 million people yearly. The burden falls heavily on Sub-Saharan Africa, where over 90% of malaria deaths are thought to occur. The toll is rising; malaria-specific mortality in young African children may have doubled during the last twenty years, perhaps due to drug resistance, insecticide resistant mosquitoes, poverty, political upheaval, and lack of effective vaccines. Almost all of these deaths are caused by one species of malaria parasites. This book addresses vital issues of malarial immunity and immunopathology, and will interest not only malariologists, but the broader immunological community.
