This yields a new approach to\r\napproximation with weighted     polynomials of the form\r\nw\"n\"(\" \"= uppercase)P\"n\"(\" \"= uppercase). The new   technique\r\nsettles several open problems, and it leads to a simple\r\nproof for the strong asymptotics on some L p(uppercase)\r\nextremal problems on the  real line with exponential weights,\r\nwhich, for the case p=2, are equivalent to power- type\r\nasymptotics for the leading coefficients of                  the\r\ncorresponding orthogonal polynomials. The method is also\r\nmodified toyield (in a sense) uniformly good approximation\r\non the whole support. This  allows one to deduce strong\r\nasymptotics in some L p(uppercase) extremal     problems with\r\nvarying weights. Applications are given, relating to          fast\r\ndecreasing polynomials, asymptotic behavior of                         orthogonal\r\npolynomials and multipoint Pade approximation.
