Engineering Mechanics with SMath Studio
Martin Kraska
This textbook introduces the use of the mathematical software SMath Studio for performing and documenting technical calculations, using the example of engineering mechanics. SMath, which is free for private users, is, like Mathcad, a powerful alternative to paper, pencil, and calculator, or even to familiar spreadsheet programs. The book guides beginners but also covers advanced topics such as numerical methods and computer algebra. With examples from statics, strength of materials, and dynamics, it covers the typical range of topics in engineering mechanics found in engineering degree programs, particularly in mechanical engineering.
Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kraska studied mechanical engineering and physical engineering at the Moscow Mining Institute, Russia, the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, Germany, and the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. He received his doctorate from the Institute of Mechanics at the Technical University of Berlin, Germany. Since 2012, he has been a professor of mechanical engineering, specializing in strength of materials and finite element method (FEM), at the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, Germany. Under his leadership, an interface between SMath Studio and the computer algebra system Maxima was developed.
