How Corporate Communication Influences the Sense of Belonging During a Crisis
Under the Consideration of the COVID-19 Pandemic
Justyna Joanna Carriedo-Konczalska
The COVID-19 pandemic challenged organizations in unprecedented ways. Although many companies had crisis communication plans, few were prepared for the demands of a global health crisis. Leaders had to adapt quickly in their communication with employees. As workforces shifted to remote work, organizations rapidly introduced new communication formats to keep employees informed about safety measures, business and changing regulations.
Initially, internal communication focused on top-down information sharing. Over time, employees became fatigued by predominantly informational messages, engagement declined, and feelings of isolation increased. Communicators were therefore challenged to strengthen employees’ sense of belonging and maintain engagement despite physical distance.
Research shows that a strong sense of belonging positively influences employee identification with the organization, engagement, collaboration and business performance. During the pandemic, corporate communication became increasingly important in fostering this sense of belonging. Internal communication serves as a bridge between management and employees, creating opportunities for dialogue and understanding. Trust is central to this process and depends on transparent two-way communication. This book examines the impact of internal communication on employees’ sense of belonging. It combines theoretical perspectives with empirical research and insights from the author´s professional experience as a communications leader.
