Empirical Phenomenology

A Method for a Science of Experience

Luigina Mortari | Malte Brinkmann

Education / Research

The book offers a clear and well-structured methodological guideline for the Empirical Phenomenological Method (EPM) in educational research. Grounded in the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl, it distinguishes eidetic inquiry from empirical attention to lived experience. EPM aims to grasp lived experience in its singular, irreducible uniqueness, and it relies on epoché, attentive listening, and faithful description. The method is useful for evaluating complex educational practices, such as ethics for citizenship, and it is applicable in real-world contexts. EPM contributes to improving teaching practices and teacher training. Finally, it provides a practical grid and concrete examples.

Luigina Mortari, PhD, is Full Professor at the University of Verona (Italy), where she teaches Philosophy of Care at the Department of Human Sciences and Epistemology of Qualitative Research at the School of Medicine. She is the founder and director of Melete – Center of Philosophy for Care and of the Interdepartmental Caring Education Research Center (CERC) at the same University. Her main research areas are the philosophy and ethics of care, the phenomenological method, and the epistemology of qualitative research in the fields of education and healthcare.
