The       present micro-econometric study\nanalyses the impact of important            socio-economic\ncharacteristics on unemployment duration in West             Germany.\nBased on a search theoretic framework unemployment duration\nis considered as a stochastic process whose evolution is\ninfluenced by economicand demographic variables like\nunemployment benefits, expected wage offers, training and\nage. This is modeled by application of the concept of          the\nhazard rate which denotes the conditional exit rate                     from\nunemployment over time given elapsed unemployment                      duration.\nContrasting more traditional models a semi-parametric\napproachis chosen which reduces the danger of\nmis-specification of the stochastic   duration process. This\nprocedure also is particularly suitable for the      analysis of\ngrouped observations on unemployment duration                   typically\ngenerated by longitudinal data sets as the                        German\n\"Socio-Economic Panel\" which is utilized for this study.\nBesides deriving a set of empirical results on unemployment\nduration in West Germanymethodological issues of duration\nanalysis are considered with particular   attention paid to\nthe impact of the sample design.
