This book, part of the Sustainable Development and Biodiversity book series, explores wetland ecosystems and the wide variety of waterbirds they support. It explains how these habitats and birds are connected, why they are important for nature and people, and what challenges they face today.
The book is divided into 4 parts. Part 1 introduces different types of wetlands, their functions, and the global diversity of waterbirds, along with key topics like breeding, migration, and habitat choice. Part 2 looks at how waterbirds and wetlands interact, including feeding strategies, food webs, seed dispersal, and the role of birds in nutrient cycles and ecosystem services. It also discusses the threats from invasive species and habitat changes. Part 3 covers conservation issues like wetland loss, pollution, and human conflicts with waterbirds. It offers solutions through protected areas, Ramsar sites, important bird areas, community involvement, and citizen science. Part 4 highlights successful conservation stories and suggests future steps for research, policy, and management.
The book is a useful resource for students, researchers, conservationists, wetland managers, and anyone interested in understanding and protecting wetlands and waterbirds.
