Addressing fundamental aspects of liquid crystal material science, it explores new applications and highlights the interdisciplinary nature of liquid crystals, which range from information displays to medical uses. These new worlds enable polar order in anisotropic fluids, alignment-free high-contrast liquid crystal displays, and chiral materials generated in an achiral system. They also enable selective antitumor activity. Additionally, the book presents significant basic scientific findings, such as dissipative structures through fluctuations and spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking. Topics include hierarchical and dissipative structures, ferroelectric liquid crystals, blue phases, supramolecular chirality transfer, and biological liquid crystals. An introduction to liquid crystals is included to facilitate understanding of the aforementioned cutting-edge fields. Distinguished by its unique perspective and insight on an emerging topic, this book serves as an authoritative guide for researchers and graduate students.

Atsushi Yoshizawa was born in Niigata, Japan in 1956. He earned his Doctor of Engineering degree in synthetic chemistry from Kyoto University. In 1985, He joined the Central Research Laboratories at Nippon Mining Co., Ltd. In 2000, He joined Hirosaki University as a full professor. He served as Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology and then as Executive Director of Planning and Vice President before retiring from Hirosaki University in 2022. He is now a professor emeritus at Hirosaki University. He received the Best Paper Award at the 14th International Display Workshops in 2007, as well as the Japanese Liquid Crystal Society Awards for Outstanding Achievement in 2012 and Distinguished Achievement and Contributions in 2023. His research interests include liquid-crystalline supermolecules with hierarchical structures, blue phase liquid crystals, ferroelectric liquid crystals, chirality in liquid crystals, and liquid-crystalline medicine.

Publication Date:

28 August 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Singapore

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9789819225231

Format:

Hardback
