Globalization and Labour Rights

Lessons from the Experiences of Bangladesh

Abdullah Al Faruque

Law / Labor & Employment

The book focuses on the challenges that economic globalization poses in industrial relations in developing countries like Bangladesh. It explores how labor rights are violated in a global supply chain, and how the international labor standards can offset the negative impacts of globalization.  After examining the multifarious functions of labor law in the globalized world, this book critically examines the effectiveness of the regulatory framework of Bangladesh to deal with these challenges. It also draws lessons from the experiences on a range of issues, including integration of human rights due diligence norms, trade union and collective bargaining, fixing minimum wage, emergence of transnational labour governance, labor rights in EPZs, and  regulatory reforms initiated after the Rana plaza disaster  in Bangladesh. The book also examines labor dispute settlement mechanisms, the role of social dialogue and migrant workers’ rights in the global and Bangladesh context.
