Setting the scene with the basic principles for a circular society/circular economy, the book progresses to provide the relevant information about material options, covering their performance including structural and non-structural functionality, longevity and potential for circularity that can help inform which have the greatest potential to provide reliable performance across a wide spectrum of applications with the least impact on the environment. It describes the state of the art in terms of circularity options of materials for different applications and considers the best potential future options. Important aspects of design to provide impact minimalization are covered by experts in the field and those at the grass-roots level including design for reuse and design for adaptability alongside guidance on methods based on life cycle analysis to support the most informed decision such that we can hand on the best possible world to future generations. This book is targeted to be accessible to a wide audience including high school and tertiary level students (from foundation level), industry, policy makers, practitioners and consumers (interested general public) to support discussion and thinking to inform individual, collective, commercial, policy and research decisions that affect the way materials flow through our society. The over-riding principle is “experts making information accessible”.

Professor Pickering has been involved in materials related research for over 30 years, specializing in composite materials. Prior to her current role, she was an industrial researcher at Plessey in the UK. She received a BSc (Eng) with Honors from Imperial College, London, and her PhD from Surrey University in the UK. Professor Pickering is the director of the Waikato Centre for Advanced Materials and Manufacture and has been leader of the Polymers and Composites Research Group, University of Waikato since 2000. She was elected as Fellow of Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand (IPENZ) in 2008 and Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand in 2026, awarded Chartered Engineer Status and certified on the International Professional Engineers register (IPENZ) in 2005 and has been a Professional Member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Communities (IoM3) since 2005. She has written more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, 6 patents, has over 15,000 citations and has been awarded the RJ Scott Medal for contributions to sustainable materials research. Professor Pickering has participated in MBIE's National Science Challenge (Science for Technological Innovation (SfTI)) as co-leader of a spearhead project on the 3D printing of biomaterials and the principal researcher and leader of the MBIE $11M funded "https://www.waikato.ac.nz/research-enterprise/research-with-waikato/amiomio-aotearoa – A circular economy for the wellbeing of New Zealand" project (https://www.waikato.ac.nz/research-enterprise/research-with-waikato/amiomio-aotearoa).

Publication Date:

11 December 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Singapore

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9789819236848

Format:

Hardback
