Socialist Journalism and Technology in Vietnam

Navigating Tradition and Innovation

Pham Chien Thang

Social Science / Media Studies

This book offers a groundbreaking exploration of socialist journalism in Vietnam by examining the intersection of traditional media practices and cutting-edge technologies. It provides an in-depth analysis of how Vietnamese journalists navigate the complex landscape of digital innovation while adhering to socialist principles, thereby filling a critical gap in the existing literature on Asian media. It delves into the rapidly evolving media ecosystem of Vietnam, where centuries-old socialist values collide with the disruptive force of digital transformation.  These topics are crucial for understanding the unique challenges and opportunities faced by the Vietnamese media in the twenty-first century. As Vietnam continues to assert its influence on the global stage, understanding its domestic media dynamics has become increasingly important for international relations, business, and cultural exchange. The book seeks to solve the problem of limited research on the specific intersection of socialist journalism and technological innovation in Vietnam. It offers fresh insights into how a socialist media system adapts to and harnesses digital technologies, thus providing valuable lessons for other countries with similar political structures. By examining case studies, analyzing policy documents, and presenting empirical research, the book offers a nuanced perspective on press freedom, censorship, and the role of journalism in a socialist society that embraces digital transformation. It explores how Vietnamese journalists balance party loyalty with professional integrity in an age of instant communication and global information flows. Furthermore, it discusses the impact of social media platforms such as Facebook and Zalo on traditional news outlets, the challenges of combating misinformation, and the potential of data-driven journalism to enhance transparency and accountability. This comprehensive work is essential for academics in media studies, journalism, and Vietnamese studies, as well as for journalism students and media professionals working in or studying Vietnamese media.
