This book integrates theoretical insights, applied research, and case studies from both the Global North and Global South regions. Topics span a wide range of emerging and critical themes: sustainable development principles, smart facade technologies, IoT integration in buildings, net-zero energy strategies for tropical climates, sky radiative cooling systems, adaptive reuse of heritage cities, and green infrastructure planning. Special attention is given to forward-looking approaches like Industry 5.0, prefabricated construction trends in China, community engagement in renewable energy transitions, and data-driven urban planning through traffic sensors. A key feature of this book is its interdisciplinary methodology, complemented by illustrative figures, tables, real-world case studies, and a didactic structure that supports both academic learning and professional application. Readers will benefit from a deepened understanding of how to integrate sustainability, innovation, and resilience into the built environment—from design and planning to implementation and policy. This book is essential for architects, engineers, urban planners, policymakers, and students aiming to advance the transition toward smarter and more sustainable cities.

Kenji Katoh is a professor emeritus and a visiting professor at Osaka Metropolitan University. His research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms of phenomena involving surface tension and solid-liquid wetting. He studies a variety of problems, including the rolling of liquid droplets on walls, liquid film flow, and dynamics of triple-phase contact line behavior. In this volume, he mainly contributed to the chapters on the fundamental physics of surface tension and wetting, as well as the theoretical analysis of several engineering applications related to wetting phenomena.

Takahiro Ito is a faculty member at Chubu University. His research focuses on dynamic wetting and interfacial behavior, particularly the motion of the triple-phase contact line and dynamic contact angles. He conducts detailed measurements of interfacial motion near the contact line, develops physical models, and employs molecular dynamics simulations to investigate wetting phenomena from a microscopic perspective. His work aims to clarify the fundamental mechanisms governing dynamic wetting phenomena across multiple length and time scales. In this book, he authored the chapter entitled Dynamic Wetting, Behavior of the Triple-Phase Contact Line, and Dynamic Contact Angle broadly.

Tatsuro Wakimoto is a faculty member at Osaka Metropolitan University specializing in fluid mechanics. His research focuses on the fundamental mechanisms governing interfacial phenomena, particularly surface tension and solid–liquid wetting. He has investigated a range of problems related to capillarity, wetting dynamics, and contact line behavior, and he is also interested in the distinctive interfacial properties of surfactant solutions and liquid metals. His work aims to clarify how these materials exhibit unique responses at fluid interfaces. In this volume, he contributed primarily to the chapters on the basic physics of surface tension and wetting.

Yoshiaki Ueda is received his Ph.D. in 2003 from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Osaka Prefecture University. He served as a Research Fellow of Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Hokkaido University, which included a period as a visiting researcher in Ecole Polytechnique. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Setsunan University. His research interests include multi-phase flow, flow-induced vibration, sloshing, low-Reynolds-number flow, the vortex method, and matched asymptotic expansions.

Manabu Iguchi is a professor emeritus at Hokkaido University and a visiting professor at Osaka Metropolitan University. He is also a professor emeritus at Northeastern University in China. He specializes in transport phenomena (momentum, heat, and mass transfer) in materials processing at high temperatures. In addition to elucidating fundamental phenomena occurring in the materials processes, he is developing novel processes mainly in the ironmaking and steelmaking industry. In this volume, he contributed primarily to the chapter treating refining and continuous casting of molten steel at temperatures of about 1600 C. The wettability of molten steel plays an essential role in this chapter.

Publication Date:

10 December 2026

Publisher:

Springer Nature Singapore

Imprint:

Springer

ISBN-13:

9789819242979

Format:

Hardback
